I rebooted as advised. I re-downloaded the update to make sure the file wasn't corrupted in transmission. I even copied over the file that worked on GX 1. I copied the file to a floppy; same thing. Maybe you're thinking it's permissions. I'm local administrator. Thinking further, I turned off DEP for just that file, and did the reboot necessary to test that. I checked the file's properties to make sure that executing the file wasn't prevented just because it came from without.

Hence, I turn to you.We are looking for a more automated process when we update device drivers and the BIOS of our Dell workstations. Are there tools available from Dell to push these updates? We don't have a budget for this, so free is the ideal price tag. Any help is always appreciated and I apologize if this isn't the proper group to place this in. We're a nonprofit so budgets are small. Also some of the comments made about the KACE had me concerned, especially given how pricey people say the appliance is.

Cost is based on the number of computers you plan to manage with it, and you might get a discount being a non-profit. It never hurts to get a quote, right?

I had a free visit from a member of the Dell Tiger Team here recently ask your Dell rep about it to help implement Openmanage tools on our small network. What you are looking for exists for servers but not for workstations unfortunately.

They used to have a tool to push updates to workstations in the free suite but now you can only download and maintain a local repository of drivers but can't push them. Thanks Eric for that insight on your experience. The research I have been doing the past couple days has lead me to that understanding as well. It looks like the best I can do is create a local repository and use the dell client system update to have the workstations pull the updates from the repository.

On a somewhat unrelated note, how was the visit from the Dell Tiger Team? Do you like Openmanager tools for managing updates to your Dell servers? We're a Dell shop, so this might be something we could implement here as well. The visit went well. We ended up dealing with a lot of issues since getting a vmware host configured to work with SNMP requires a reboot and I didn't have that setup yet. My download of the ISO were corrupt and we had to wait to redownload it.

We got some of it taken care of, but we wasted a lot of time. If you can arrange for someone to come in, make sure you get a full list of everything that would be helpful to have in place and get it going ahead of time. That way, you are just installing and using the tools when they arrive. My goal is to have them back later in the year to go over it again and make sure I am still using it correctly.

Power it on again - same thing. So I turn it off again. Doubled checked the PSU interior and the mainboard. All connections are good, and all capacitors Rubycon are in excellent shape.

After reseating the RAM, I power it on again - same thing. I've prepared a BIOS flash floppy A11 and was told to insert it on power up so it can do a BIOS recovery or something like thatbut since it won't boot the floppy drive, I can't use it.

You just have to find one jumper which is normally under hard drive. This works at least with Dell Optiplex 6xx and 7xx series.

Open the case and you should see hard drive. Remove the jumper and plug power cord back to computer and turn on the computer. Power off your computer and unplug power cord again. Now you just need to put jumper back where you removed it and put hard drive back and close the cover.

Plug power supply cable again back and turn on your computer. If you hit F2 right away when you see text on the screen you should access the BIOS menu and you should notice that password is gone now and you can access everything on BIOS and you can even change password if you want no need to do that.
